PSHE and SRE
‘And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’ Micah 6:8.
Through the teachings of Jesus, all can flourish spiritually, emotionally and academically throughout life, living out love and justice for all. Our Christian values of love, justice, compassion, wisdom, forgiveness and friendship underpin the life of the school community and impact on our daily lives. Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School strives to provide the best possible education for our children. We aim for excellence within our happy, secure school where each individual’s achievements are valued and celebrated. By using a holistic approach, we will provide a curriculum that offers a diverse and challenging environment to inspire and motivate every child in our care.
At Guilden Sutton CE Primary School, we believe that pupils must be provided with an education that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), alongside our Relationships and Sex Education, enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible citizens, giving them the knowledge to make informed decisions about their own wellbeing and that of others. Our curriculum tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues, and the rights and responsibilities to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse community.
Our PSHE curriculum covers all areas of the subject through a carefully planned programme – Coram Life Education. This programme starts in Reception and is taught throughout the whole school each week. Our framework for PSHE embeds the three strands – Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World – as well as the statutory aspects of the Relationships and Sex Education.
There are many other opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside of the discreet lesson, including assemblies where a range of themes are covered. Some of these include cross curriculum teaching such as in PE, Science and RE; the school council and ethos group where there are three representatives from each class; joint activities between year groups such as ‘Reception Buddies’ and ‘Reading Buddies’.
By the end of their journey at Guilden Sutton CE Primary School, the children will be ready for their transition into high school and adult life. They will demonstrate confidence, resilience and awareness and be able to make good choices to keep themselves and others safe. The PSHE curriculum will prepare the children for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of an adult life.
Year 5 and 6 entered a Cheshire Police Schools Media Challenge 2021. The topic was bullying, tolerance and hate crime. The children needed to produce a video or podcast on this topic, explaining how they would make Cheshire a better place. One of our entries got through to the final and came 2nd place in the public vote! You can watch this video here.
