Intent

At Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School, we aim to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We offer pupils the opportunity to compete in sports and other activities, in order to help build character and reinforce values such as fairness and respect.

PE lessons are taught with the following aims in mind:

  • Meet the requirements of the national curriculum
  • Promote a healthy and active lifestyle
  • Encourage physical activity and exercise
  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Build self-esteem, confidence and resilience
  • Provide all pupils with access to the lesson
  • Develop pupils’ academic, social and physical ability
  • Encourage good behaviour and respect amongst pupils
  • Promote team work and cooperation amongst pupils

Implementation

At Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School, our PE curriculum is varied and we ensure that we meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. The curriculum is led and overseen by the PE Specialists, with pupils receiving two hours of high quality of PE using the vast outside spaces and school hall. PE is promoted across the school in a number of different ways including – Playground Leaders, Sports Ambassadors, inter and intra school competitions, and a range of before and after school sports clubs that are available to pupils as part of our ambition to ensure that all pupils are taking part in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. We have an inclusive approach and value the importance of physical and mental well-being.

Children take part in a range of invasion, striking and fielding or net and wall games, we promote and creativity in gymnastics and dance as well as providing opportunities for athletics using both indoor and outdoor environments plus outdoor and adventurous activities. The children in Year 4 and Year 6 have the opportunity to go on a residential trip to different outdoor adventure centres in Wales. Children have swimming lesson throughout KS2 which enables them to swim 25m and be aware of water safety situations. This, alongside a specialist PE teacher and coaches, supports pupils with a range of abilities and interests with pathways to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming lifelong participators in physical activity. All children receive the same curriculum offer. Our ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum is adapted to ensure learning for all our children is never narrowed. P.E. resources and additional support are available and utilised where appropriate to further enhance first quality teaching.

Impact

At Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School, we inspire and motivate children to participate in a variety of sports that are engaging and fun. Alongside this, we promote commitment, fair play, teamwork, sportsmanship and determination.

At the end of each unit of work, pupils will be assessed by the subject specialist teacher using a pre-arranged framework. Children are assessed in 3 main categories:  fundamentals for that sport or activity; advanced skills for that sport or activity, using a larger range of techniques and describing the impact these have on performance; consistency of using the fundamental skills, showing fluency and good control over their bodies. Children are also provided with a self-assessment template, helping them to understand the different criteria involved with development within P.E. (Head, Hands, Heart). Assessment is different between KS1 and KS2, ensuring that subject specific terminology is used and understood. Targets and implementations for future teaching are provided and discussed both individually and as a class. In P.E. lessons, children are provided opportunities for reading, promoting a love of reading in a number of different ways (e.g. understand rules of games, anatomy physiology of the body).

Our aim is that children will leave Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School with the knowledge, skills and attitude that will allow them to continue to lead a healthy active lifestyle and develop a love of sport which leads to a happy and healthy life. Here at Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School, our children are confident sports people and understand the purpose of Physical Education and how it can prepare them for the wider world. The vast majority of pupils reach end of year expectations.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. We are delighted to have been recognised for our success, recieving the Gold Award!
